Profitability is a very simple equation but is the long term life blood of any business. In its simplest terms it is revenue – costs, but what should you focus on to drive profitability and what are areas you should bear in mind?
- Like any significant improvement project, there will be hundreds of things you could do, look for the biggest levers in your business
- Try not to constrain your thinking; many people look at cost savings, but there may some great ways to improve the revenue side of your business; there is only so much potential in cost savings, whereas revenue has potential often only limited by your strategic ability and imagination
- You may need to take a short term drop in profitability to achieve a longer term step change, so don’t be afraid to invest in your business as long as the business case is substantiated
- Remember to work ON your business not just IN your business
